The Wormhole

Have you ever watched the English movie, Alice in the Wonderland? It is a good example which is used to explain how the wormhole works, which (perhaps) will make it possible for us to travel between universes. Alice travels to a world that has different laws, rules and common logics from how we think. Alice manages to calmly adapt herself in that magical world. Would this other universe that we are pondering be as wild and magical as Alice’s magical world? Would we encounter the same thing that Alice encountered? How would we adapt to this new environment? Our imaginations run wild to think about this possibility.

Are you guessing what a wormhole is? Take a piece of an A4 paper. Then you make two dots on the paper on the opposite side horizontally. Logically, among all the routes to reach between the two dots, the nearest distance is a straight line. Next, you fold the paper into half. It’s nearer and the dots can 'touch' each other now. Make a hole, and then go through that paper to travel between the dots. That is what wormhole is. If each dot represents a universe or a planet on a particular universe, then a wormhole allows us to travel between universe and planets in a short time.

The once popular science fiction series entitled Stargate SG-1 revolves around traveling between different universes using a device called the ‘stargate’. Can a device such as a ‘stargate’ be built in the future? Physicists are still trying to prove the existence of wormhole and figuring out the possibility of physically travelling between wormholes. If wormhole exists, or if one day we can make a wormhole, the first step would be to conduct experiments by perhaps sending manned or unmanned probes to search for signs of life on the other side. The probes will provide information such as the need to wear protective gear, temperature, composition of gas, possibility of any living things or intelligent creatures.

Why is it important to talk about wormhole? Again, our universe, one day in the future, is doom to die. We as humans, in general, do not want to be a part of the destruction and surely want to escape from the collapsing of the universe. Well, the only way is to escape and go to other universe and start a new life there. We hope there exists another universe that has habitable planets or resources that we can use while staying in space ships, or shall we say space colonies. If wormhole can be created, and travelling physically between wormholes is possible, then there is a bright future for human race.
